Faculty dinner
Nov 21, 2006 in All things me
It was a lovely night out yesterday as it was an annual dinner organized by my faculty for its graduate students and its soon-to-be graduates. I am one of the soon-to-be grad
.
Held at the Eichbaum Brewery House (Eichbaum Brauhaus), I didn’t realize that there was quite a big turn out of ex-students and some of my former classmates were also there. It was really nice to see some familiar faces again and also to meet some ex, ex, ex students that I never met before. The dean of the faculty was there and also many of my profs. Too bad I don’t have any pictures for the night because I forgot to bring my camera!!
The food was nothing to brag about. I wasn’t that hungry anyway but I ordered a Flammkuchen sort of a German pancake the size as big as a normal pizza with some ham, onions and some spinach with gorgonzola cheese. The first few slices was really tasty but after 3 slices I was full due to the added cheese and I ended up having gastric because I was too full!!
I was thinking with whom I’ll be sitting next to at the dinner table on the way to the restaurant but didn’t realized I ended up sitting next to the former dean of the faculty who really has an amicable character. I attended his lecture once during my first semester. It was funny listening to him recounting his funny stories during his teaching profession and his overseas experience as a guest professor at universities all over the world.
At one point he was saying:
he : there’s a lack of women in germany
me : but that’s not true..i think there are at least as many women as men in germany.. ( me confused alrdy) .. maybe there’re few women who study engineering in germany..
he : yes ..that’s why we import them ..
me: ???
Then it dawned on me that he was referring to me and the lack of involvement of women in engineering field in general. I think it’s true somehow. The aren’t a lot of German women who work as engineer in Germany. Engineering is long known as a male dominated field especially in this country. Sometimes I felt a little conspicuous as I was the only female in lecture. Well, it’s not bad though, at least you can get quite some attention from the lecturer.
Sigh..I missed my uni days.

Absolutely free today so I’m sort of running through blogs and catching up on archives. Looks like I’m enjoying yours the most.
Psst, I was the only girl in my Engineering course too. And one of those few girls to work among the men in ‘their’ turf.
Stardust, thank you. I’m truly flattered
.
!!
Psst, welcome to the club
