It’s the V-Day

My mum was at the market today to buy fish from a fish stall. She seldom cook at home as both me and my brother are not home most of the time or only during weekends when my bro comes back.

The fishmonger told my mom “Wah, auntie, so seldom see you around. I thought you don’t cook often? Today you celebrate Valentine’s Day leh Winking 2?”

The thing is I like to eat fish, then my mum mai buy fish loh. My mum asked me whether people in Europe celebrate V-Day like here where I noticed the importance of V-Day has become very much commercialized and hyped. I read in the papers that some hotels in China have these V-Day packages for couples who plan to spend this ’special’ day in some super expensive suite a night for a price of MYR10k and above.

Is it worth spending such astronomical price on an event that IMHO does not bear any significance just because some lovers in the Middle Ages exchanged their love for each other on this day? I think our lives have become so mundane that we gotta have a day just to explicitly display our love for our partner with gifts for other people to see, knowing very well that gifts or flowers bought on this day are 5 times more than the normal price. Call me a sceptic but I think people are really fooled into spending an exorbitant amount of money for gifts just to celebrate V-Day. Have relationships nowadays become so artificial that is material-based?

When you are in a relationship, there shouldn’t be an excuse to celebrate our love towards one another on a daily basis and not just on this V-Day. I noticed another thing is that I have never seen such extravagant gifts like a bouquet of Rochers chocolate wrapped like a bouquet of flowers in Germany. I realised the people here are more creative in gifts and flowers. Maybe because it’s real expensive to buy a big bouquet of flowers in Germany and it may cost more than 100Euros whereas here you can get it for MYR100. Have the people in this country become so rich that money spent on such thing is considered normal? If so, I have yet to digest.

Oh ya..I have other reasons to celebrate today and that is Ee Chin’s birthday! Happy birthday my dear and may your years to come be filled joy and health! *Hugs Hug 2*
