Getting a driving license
Mar 31, 2007 in C’est la vie
Getting a German driving license is a long and time-consuming process. It can take up half a year or the fastest 3 months time. And not to mention very expensive also! Altogether you may need to pay up to 1000Euros or more to get a driving license depending on how good you are. Can you believe it??
Although the license is valid everywhere in Europe and for life, I still think that it’s a tad expensive. It is however much tougher to obtain than a Malaysian driving license. Let’s see, if my memories don’t fail me, I think I paid altogether 200MYR for my Malaysian driving license back in the mid-90s. See the difference between 1000Euros and 200MYR?
What do I have to go through in order to get a driving license here that costs so much?
Here: I have to attend 14 compulsory hours of theory classes.
Msia: I think theory classes just take up 3-4 hours only right?
Here: I have to attend a first aid course for 6,5hrs straight! Attended mine yesterday and I finally know how to do mouth-to-mouth resuscitation
. No kidding here. To practise that I gotta do it on a doll called Little Anne below. It was a little yucky to place your mouth on the doll where everyone in the course HAD to do it. Of course before your turn the mouth was disinfected first lah! No way I’m gonna put my mouth there where the doll has been in contact with saliva of thousands of people before me without any disinfection! Poor Anne, she has to endure being kissed by sooo many people.
Msia: I don’t remember attending one and I don’t think attending one is compulsory at all!
Here: I have to get an eye check to see whether I need glasses to drive (because if you are short sighted, it will be stated in your driving license later that you need to wear glasses while driving).
Msia: No eye check is compulsory.
Here: The practical part is the most interesting here. I have to have 12 compulsory practical classes. And during these 12 hours I have to practise driving on highways
, night driving
and also driving on interurban routes. We have to drive on highways for the practical test also!
Msia: Only practise driving in the city.
Here: For preparation for the theoretical test, I have to practise answering all the questions in the forms below because the test will look like one of the forms below. I just need to get 2 of these wrong and I’ll flunk it! Tough!
Msia: I think back then we have to answer some similar form like those above right? However I find that the variety of questions that are being asked for the German driving license is HUGE!! And there are no doubt more traffic rules here than in msia.
Seeing the process that I have to go through, when everything goes well, I’ll be able to get my driving license end of this summer! *fingers crossed*

wow, getting a license in your country is such a hassle. I guessed that there is no bribery occurs over there. Unlike us, many simply give duit kopi just to pass the test. I think it’s good to have comprehensive test and this will reduce the accident rate on the road and lesser people break the traffic rules. I saddened to see and read many traffic casualities on newspapers who doesn’t cherish their own life.
yeah .. i agree with pek mun that it’s quite a hassle to get a license over there … good luck ..
