The joy of eating

For my dinner on Saturday I decided to indulge in cooking another of my favorite dish.

I guess the picture says more than words. Do you know what this dish is? It’s kangkung belacan. It’s been a long time since I’ve eaten this dish. My grandma used to cook this dish quite often while I was young. She cooked it using the traditional way where she’d blend the ingredients (garlic, shallots, belacan and dried prawns) by pressing them using a pestle and a mortar. I think mortar will be the next item on my shopping list for my kitchen. Talking about getting domesticated heh ;) .

I was out grocery shopping in an Asian store on Saturday and the green of this leafy vegie caught my eyes. Since I was craving for some kick-ass-fiery-belacan sauce, I decided to give this dish a try. I was so ’syiok’ after the first bite that I kept on commenting to Thorsten between mouthfuls of kangkung that this taste exactly like the dish I used to have at home :) . A warning though, belacan really has this strong smell. I just used a small pinch of it and it’s enough.

Accompanying my kangkung belacan dish is this ‘Dong Chong Chou’ Soup. You see this squiggly thingy in the pic which resembles some sorta worm? That’s ‘Dong Chong Chou’. That’s why there’s the word ‘worm’ or 虫 in the name of the soup.

Then on Sunday, guess what..I decided to stretch the limit of my culinary skills with this dish. There was quite a furore in the blogosphere a while back about this dish because it seems like everywhere I click it’s like Kolo Mee here and there and everywhere. So I must try it and find out myself. I don’t know where you can find this dish in Ipoh because I haven’t eaten this before. So here it is. My version of Kolo Mee :) modified using chicken fillet adapted from this recipe. As I mentioned before that I’ve never tasted Kolo Mee, so I wouldn’t know whether I pass the Kolo Mee criteria or not.

The result…I’m hooked with the taste of it which still lingers on my taste buds. I must say it’s really not bad for my first time ;) . Even Thorsten said I should make this more often. By the way I’ve made up a list of things that I’m eying for my kitchen ;) . I think eating is really a joy in life and cooking is no less enjoyable too.
