Weihnachtsmarkt in Speyer
The Christmas season in Germany is well known for its Weihnachtsmarkt or literally ‘Christmas market’. You can find a Weihnachtsmarkt almost in every city in Germany, be it big or small. A visit to the Weihnachtsmarkt at least once in the Christmas season is almost a must.
The Weihnachtsmarkt we went to was in Speyer, a scenic town situated beside the Rhine river, well known for its Speyer Cathedral, which is one of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

You can hunt for crystal decorations to Christmas bells and lightings, household supplies to kitchenwares, beautifully crafted scented candles to exotic spices and all sorts of aromatic oil that senses can imagine there. Others go to the Weihnachtsmarkt just to join in the crowd to have some snacks like 1/2m long Frankfurter sausage, crepes, pretzels or waffles topped with strawberry cream.
I wanted to look for some Christmas presents prior going to the Weihnachtsmarkt. I ended up in a shop fulled with pralines and chocoooolates! Talking about running out of idea of what to buy eh. How I wish I can buy every chocolate in the shop!
After spending some due amount of time in that shop, I decided that I’d better pay for my chocolates and leave before splurging anymore on chocolates which I might regret later when weighing myself
.
A stroll on the streets of Speyer was not without its surprises. There’s this Nikolaus, in German equivalent to a Santa Claus, on a carriage, inviting passersby to hop on his carriage for a round of free ride around town. Not bad eh
.
Look at the amount of people at the Weihnachtsmarkt. The big looming church-like building at the background is the Speyer Cathedral. Click here for a set of 6 pictures of the Speyer Cathedral I took some time ago in summer.
People were like elbowing their way through the crowd. A visit to the Weinachtsmarkt is not complete without a glass of mulled wine. Just in case you are wondering what a mulled wine is, it is red wine cooked with spices and it is served hot. You know how good the first sip of a hot beverage feels running down your throat when your body were freezing. Perfect for a chilly winter day.
