On the way to Jungfraujoch
Mar 26, 2008 in Going places
The purpose of most travelers to Interlaken is to go up to the Jungfraujoch mountain, situated about 3454m above sea level. There is special cog railway track, called Jungfraubahn, built for this purpose. These people are amazing, building tunnels deep into the mountains to bring us normal people up to the mountain. The temperature on top was -18°C that day! Not kidding! That didn’t hinder us from heading up because I was dressed up for it (or so I thought!).
The journey itself takes about 2.5hrs but worth every minute of the travel time because the scenery along the way is absolutely breathtaking. I was totally in awe and humbled at the same time, as I behold the magnificent view before me throughout the journey in the train. This group of Chinese tourists, who were on the same train as me, kept on commenting ‘好蓝的天! 好蓝的天!’ (the sky is so blue!). Indeed it was. The landscape that spreads out beyond us was sublime beauty. The scenery was like cut out from a picture book. I couldn’t help but felt so lucky to be able to witness this awe-inspiring exquisite beauty by mother nature.
It is really recommended to bring along a pair of sunglasses with UV filter for every visit to the mountains to protect your eyes because as the sun rays reflects on the white snow, which is everywhere around us, and when the strong sunlight reaches your eyes, it can really hurt your retina. Oh and not to forget some suncream too.
Man, I haven’t experienced the temperature at -18°C before.
Even with a thick pullover with two pieces of long sleeve cotton shirts underneath, 3 pairs of socks and a pair of boots and a thick shawl, I felt like a penguin. A under-dressed penguin. I could still feel the chill creeping up my bones, I couldn’t feel my ears and I had a feeling that my toes were falling off. Summer would be a better season to visit Jungfraujoch.

Wow… It’s a magnificent view from the top…
But the temperature is too freezing for me… I guess I can’t the such cold temperature.
Jaina: Yep the view along the way up to Jungfraujoch is amazing. It’s only in winter that the temperature can drop till so low..but in summer should be better.
Just wear warm winter clothing and you should be ok
