Munich in December
Ah..It’s December, my favorite month in winter. In fact, I’d really recommend you to visit Germany in December, that is if you don’t mind the cold, because you can really be drawn into the festive mood due to Christmas that’s around the corner.
Towns will usually be lit up with twinkling lights and almost in every city, you’ll be able to find a Christmas Market (Weihnachtsmarkt), be it big or small throughout the whole of December.
There are many names for Christmas Markets in Germany, the bigger ones are often called Christkindlmarkt. I love to stroll at Christmas Markets. The smell of sweet roasted almonds, smoked chestnuts and baked waffles wafting through the air in the crisp winter night is absolutely mouthwatering.
Having a cup of warm mulled wine (Glühwein) at the Christmas Markets is a must because you definitely need something to warm you up while strolling around at temperature close to zero degrees Celsius! Furthermore, the inviting smell of cinnamon, cloves and vanilla from the wine is so very tantalizing, making it almost too tempting to resist
.
I had the best mulled wine to date at the Munich’s Christkindlmarkt. It wasn’t too sweet and the combination of the spices were just right…ah it was simply divine.
The Christkindlmarkt in Munich is located at the famous Marienplatz, directly in front of the town hall. It was wonderful because there were speakers placed strategically at every corner of the square, airing merry Christmas carols. If you are lucky, you’ll see a Santa Claus strolling by too
.
Stalls at Christmas Markets are usually very colorful selling pretty stuffs, from perfumed candles and aromatic oils to Christmas decorations (sometimes at exorbitant prices).
One of my favorite piece of architecture of all time, the town hall of Munich at Marienplatz! I can never get tired of admiring it and I can sit all day at the Marienplatz just to wait for the clock to chime! At certain time of the day, the figurines at the clock tower (in the middle) will move too!
So, what’s not to love about December when it comes with Christmas cookies, Christmas presents, Christmas Markets and twinkling lights, right?
KY, wow, you take awesome pictures. The City Hall building is magnificent. Just lovely. Is it snowing yet in Germany? That will add to the holiday season!
Dawn, thank you
. It started to snow already at some places but the place that I’m staying doesn’t snow that often but I’m hoping it’ll snow in Christmas..fingers crossed
.
wah, what a beautiful scenery at night… I didn’t know it’s so lively at night in Germany…I always thought most shops close early before the night comes..
What a great series of photos! Munich looks like a dreamland!! You’re a lucky girl to see such beautiful festive sights!
Haaa… I thought I could smell the nuts in the chilled air!
The view is truly picturesque!! What camera model and lens did you use to capture these night views?! It’s truly beautiful!!
Jaina Mun, bear in mind that nightfall comes at about 4.30pm in the evening during winter. So it was actually not that late at night when I took that picture
.
Stardust, thank you. Munich is indeed wonderful.
AL, I’m using Nikon D40 with its 18-55mm lens, absolutely love it
