Fill my day with chocolate

by Yen posted March 24, 2009 category Going places

I used to stay at the vicinity of a chocolate factory a few years ago. Smells of chocolate would eventually permeat the air. It was actually a good thing because the smell somehow reduce my cravings for chocolates, seriously :) . Now that I’ve moved to another place, I actually miss having the chocolatey-smell.

While I was in Cologne last week, I was thrilled to find out that they have a museum dedicated to all-things-chocolate, from the origin of cocoa beans to the history of chocolates. It was interesting to find out that Germans actually consume 9.16kg of chocolates a year, just about 1kg shy of their Swiss neighbour! The chocolate marketThere is a part of the museum built into a chocolate factory, where visitors are allowed to view every process involved in the making of chocolates. The picture below with me standing in front of some huge containers used to store the ingredients for making chocolate and behind me was the container for storing refined sugar, full to its brim! Chocolate factoryI’ve eaten chocolate fondue but I’ve never seen a chocolate fountain in this size before! There was a worker standing at the fountain and her work was to dip cookies into the chocolate and pass them out to visitors that walk by. Chocolate fountainChocolate bunnies anyone? I’ve never really like to eat chocolate bunnies. Personally I think they are too sweet as I prefer chocolates with high cacao content. But I don’t mind having them as decorations anyway :P .
Molds for chocolate bunniesAt the entrance of the museum, there was a section dedicated to the ‘arts’ made with chocolate. There were paintings drawn with melted chocolates (no kidding), or paintings with chocolate themes and the coolest ‘piece’ of art on display I think, is this barbie blondie ‘drowned’ in chocolate. I wonder what was the message the artist was trying to convey eh? Tell me if you’ve figured it out.Chocolate 'art'Oh, by the way, Easter is coming. Have you had your chocolate Easter bunnies yet? Why not get one from Lindt, in super-sized format for 39Euros ;) . Chocolate bunny by LindtIf I were to get such a huge chocolate bunny, I wouldn’t bring myself to eat it, would you? Aside from it being too sweet for me,  it’s also almost too pity to tear the lovely bunny apart. I don’t care if the chocolate expires, y’know, as long as nothing crawls out from it ;) .

The museum is definitely worth a visit for chocolate lovers. Visit their website for more information.
