Reliving childhood

by Yen posted November 27, 2009 category All things me

I used to collect stamps back when I was in primary school. Collecting stamps was something like a default hobby for us back then because video or computer games were still sort of unheard off. It was also quite en vogue to join the school’s philately club. Stamp album I had a few ‘stamps-swapping-buddies’. We used to schlepp our precious stamp albums to school for our stamps-swapping-sessions in between lunch-break. I’d squeal with delight when I managed to swap stamps from faraway countries like from New Zealand or Russia. However as time passes by, our stamps-swapping-sessions became less and less frequent until we’ve completely outgrown our hobby. My stamp albums since then, were neatly tucked away in a cabinet, collecting dust. Stamps Nowadays, I don’t really threat this as a hobby anymore but old habits die hard. I’d still automatically cut out the stamps from envelopes whenever I chanced upon any or I’d politely ask the owner whether I can have the stamps on their envelopes. Who knows, maybe someday, I can show them to my children and they can pick up from where I left…. someday.

  1. haha, yeah, surprisingly enough, even though I reside in remote location in Indonesian jungle, I did have the same hobby as you :-) Is that mean during early 80ies children on that generation had experience the same “global trend” of collecting used stamps?

  2. Hahaha, me too, picked up this hobby from my grandfather, and I still cut out stamps from envelopes but not doing anything with them. Albums and stamps are stacked up in a box.

  3. Ooh, you are still collecting stamps?
Yea, those were the days that most of us would collect stamps and exchanging stamps in classes. :)
I still cut stamps out from envelopes once a while too.

  4. Jessica, LOL, see I knew collecting stamps back in the 80s was the ‘in’ thing to do ;) .

Dawn, I am sort of like you now, cutting out stamps from envelopes and putting them aside :) .

Jaina, I’m not an active stamp collector now. Sigh, it was fun back then wasn’t it ;) ?

  5. I still collect them, and same as you, will still cut some pretty stamps out from the envie. And also still getting first day cover. Beautiful hobbies never die :)
