While tending to my plants a few days ago, I saw ‘something’ hiding beneath the baby parsley. A snail is lurking amongst my precious herb garden! But according to bf’s mother, snails with coiled shells post no harm to plants. The real culprit is those snails without shells (or literally known ‘naked’ snail in German ). However I still find it to be a little out of place loitering around the parsley. They are sort of like a living nightmare for gardeners who wish to grow their plants as pesticide-free as possible but the presence of these culprits make organic-gardening almost impossible. A colleague of mine told me that he used to place electrical-wires on the ground surrounding its vegetable plants, with voltage high enough to kill the snails but still low enough without hurting oneself to combat snail invasion! Now that’s an idea I should consider…

I think I’m the last person on Earth who had just watched this movie. Okay, here’s the truth, I was actually quite unimpressed the first time I saw the trailer of this movie. Not another science-fiction-based animation, I was thinking because I am no fan of science fiction (WHAT?? I can hear you exclaiming out loud). However I kept hearing only good reviews from friends and colleagues about this movie on-and-off since it came on the screen here and then I decided I MUST give it a try because I need to see it myself in order to love or hate it. Yup, that’s me.

So on a rather drizzly Sunday afternoon, I went for the movie with quite high an expectation on my side and out I came, almost three hours later, totally blinded by awesomeness. It was one of the finest, most beautiful movie I’ve ever seen, in 3D! The scenes, the landscape were all too magical. Those colourful giant trees and blinking plants were so impressive and those drifting jelly-fish-like ferns were somewhat so touchable and real. I was like being drawn into an enchanting world of make-believe, where every living being was in-sync with nature in the wonderful planet of Pandora.

I am really glad I watched this movie on the big screen with its 3D effect because watching the film later on your TV or on your computer screen will not justify the spectacular visual effects that comes with it. My, and I still have the image of that wondrous colourful forest in my head.

Although the film, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, was first released last year’s Christmas, I never got a chance to watch it any earlier until last weekend.

The story is brilliant. Although some reviews said it’s a tad too long (almost 3hrs!), I never noticed the passing of time until the lights went on in the cinema, that’s how absorbed I was by the story and I savored every moment of it.

David Fincher, director of ‘Seven’, ‘Fight Club’ and ‘Zodiac’ (all my favorite films!) breaks away from his usual thriller-terrain and his latest film, albeit taken on a slower pace and lacking of his usual goosebumps-down-your-neck gory scenes, proves just as able to get under your skin. It is simplicity at its finest.

This beautiful film tells the story of Benjamin (Brad Pitt), born with the size of a baby but with an appearance and symptoms of decline of an old man. While everyone around him grow old, he ages backward (he grows younger with the passing of time!). Unusual, far-fetched or bizarre as it may sound, the film manages to pull off the depiction of the story elegantly, with a subtle touch of ingenuity.
What amazes me most is that the features of Brad Pitt is recognizable in almost every phase of life of his character, well, except the baby and the teenage part. His portrayal was made so believable, it is hard not to believe that’s Brad Pitt there.

To me, the film is a masterpiece in itself. Wonderful landscapes, visually artistic scenes, brilliant acting and you can’t miss the essence of the film, the portrayal of love in different stages of life.

Life isn’t measured in minutes, but in moments.

Indeed, I’ll bear that in mind. A truly must-see film.

It’s been ages since I’ve been to a musical. My last visit to a theater was like two years ago in Vienna. So while I was in Munich a week ago, I decided to definitely visit the Deutsches Theater if my schedule allows because I absolutely LOVE musicals! Unlike in cinema, it is a totally different experience to see the actors performing life on stage! We were lucky enough to still be able to get some last minute tickets for the classical piece ‘My Fair Lady’ for 68Euros (ouch!). If you really want to enjoy yourself at a play, you might as well make sure you’ll have the best seat possible, right?
I was sitting at the fourth row from the stage and I had a fantastic view of the stage and the actors! In Germany, the plays/musicals are mostly conducted in German, so it might sound a little strange at first to have a classic piece like this to be played in German.
However I’m already used to watching Jackie Chan speaks German (his voice was dubbed) on TV here, so I’ll make do with the Berlin accent by Eliza Doolittle instead of the original Cockney accent used in the English version.
I had a little self-doubt at first, thinking that my German was not up to it in order to understand the whole play due to the accent and all. But my doubt was baseless because Berlinerisch isn’t that difficult to catch after all and the whole play was a hugely enjoyable affair.

The acting was brilliant and the musical performance of the whole ensemble was absolutely superb. It is worth to just watch the dancing and listen to the music alone. I didn’t realized that Prof. Higgins, the phonetic expert played by Daniel Morgenroth, is rather attractive . The sparks of chemistry that flew between Eliza and him on stage (the last picture) is not to be missed.

What amazed me most is the beautiful singing voices of the cast, such powerful and strong vocals..ah…it was simpley a lovely night.

Pictures of the play with actors are from: Admiralpalast Berlin

I LOVE to read and honestly, this chair ought to be THE dream chair for a fiery bookworm.
According to the manufacturer nobody & Co., this chair alone stores ’5 metres of books’! WHOA! That’s plenty of space spared by using just one of this chair alone. So instead of erecting a whole wall of cabinets to store your books, might as place two or three of these chairs in your room and there you have your 10-15metres of storage place for your books!

But the Chinese in me, who sometimes tends to be a little superstitious, believes that it’s a definitely ‘no-no’ to sit on books. I’m not really sure why but I used to get admonished by my grandma and great-aunts when I sat on books as a child. I think they say you’ll be illiterate in your next life or something like that.

However, superstitions aside, I still think that it’s a really cool chair. Although I still wouldn’t wanna sit on it because I think I might get too distracted surrounded by so MANY books, in such proximity. The musty odour of old paperbacks mingled amongst new books evoke a familiar olfactory sensation in me, which my brain would automatically translate them into ‘READ ME! READ ME!’.

I don’t like to watch movies dubbed in German and what more German movies made in Germany. However the skeptical me will still give a movie a chance no matter in what language it is in or where its origin is as long as it is really worth watching.

One of those very good German movies is The Lives of Others (Das Leben der Anderen) which garnered an Oscar in 2007 as the Best Foreign Language Film. If you still remember your history class lessons well, you’ll recall that Germany has a battered past as a result of those world wars which left this country bitterly divided into East and West Germany.

The storyline is simple yet the portrayal and the meaning passed on is poignantly profound. The story takes place in East Germany back in 1984, where it was still ruled by the then socialist state GDR (German Democratic Republic), but the system operated more like a communist state. The suffering and desperation of its citizens living under the regime were deftly captured in the film.

Back in GDR, it was not a secret that the state often placed surveillance on individuals, usually businessmen, prominent writers and directors or anyone suspected to be pro-Western. The story unfolds from the viewpoint of this secret agent, who was assigned to spy on a playwright, suspected of dissidence.

Forget about dagger chase and fast-paced actions usually delivered by a conventional spy film. In fact, there aren’t any fast-paced action scenes at all. The most commendable feature of this film is the performance of its actors and the brilliant camerawork and setting which created a subdued, semi-black-and-white environment to emphasize the oppressive and claustrophobic atmosphere behind the wall.

I love the ending of the film. Unexpected, bittersweet with a perfect touch of pensiveness. One of the best German film I’ve ever watched and notably a very outstanding one.

It is a very lovely park indeed, with plenty of leafy trees, fountains and a very outstanding water tower right in the middle. I decided on an impulse to take a stroll at the park because the day was beautiful enough to indulge myself. To my delight, I came upon a few couples having their wedding photo shoot at the park. No doubt taking advantage of the lovely autumn setting. It was so romantic and I couldn’t help but wonder in which season I’d choose my wedding to take place? Spring sounds nice when everything awakens after a long winter sleep. But it might still be a tad cold as the winter chill in Germany more often than not tends to extend its stay longer than desired. Summer might be perfect but then it might be too hot for that wedding dress. However that’s when all my girl friends got married in Malaysia and they didn’t seem to mind the scorching tropical heat after all on their big day.Autumn looks beautiful enough. But autumn in Germany can be very unpredictable. It’s really your lucky day here when the sun shines in autumn.

That guy (hiding behind the tree) in the picture above was so funny. He was shaking the tree like every 5 secs to induce some falling leaves effect to complement the autumn-y feel.

Autumn sounds nice eh .

I’m so into the US TV series The Office nowadays, once again influenced by my boyfriend. The series is actually an adaptation from the original UK series. I’ve watched the first episode of both versions and their plots were more or less similar and I love the US version the most. There are actually many more versions of The Office around the world. There’s even a similar version here in Germany, although I haven’t watched it before.I was actually quite reluctant to start watching the series in the first place. Perhaps I prefer not to be reminded of work even during my spare time. I know it sounds silly actually, you can’t actually compare a sitcom with real life right? But hey, the office sounds really like the office, right ?
But after much persuasion from my boyfriend, I decided to give it a try because I like Steve Carell . He plays the slightly neurotic but mostly cringe-inducing regional manager of a paper company, Michael Scott, who drinks his coffee out of his cup that says ‘World’s Best Boss’. Sometimes I do really wonder, whether this kind of people really exist and make a mental note myself to be thankful that I don’t have a boss like this .

Here are some of my favorite quotable quotes from the very Michael Scott.

“I don’t understand. We have a day honoring Martin Luther King, but he didn’t even work here.“

“I love inside jokes. I’d love to be a part of one someday.“

“You may look around and see two groups here; white collar, blue collar. But I don’t see it that way, and you know why not? Because I am collar-blind.”

“The most sacred thing I do is care. And provide for my workers, my family. I give them money. I give them food. Not directly, but through the money. I heal them. Today I am in charge of picking a great new healthcare plan. Right, that’s what this is all about. Does that make me their doctor? Um… yes. In a way. Yeah, like a specialist.“
