Piano lessons
Come October, it’s been a year since my first piano lesson. I recall the time when I’ve made my the decision to take up piano which caused some raised eyebrows here and encountered a few doubting Thomases there. Okay, I admit it’s not easy all the time but giving up is not a choice either. Whenever I’m in doubt or felt frustrated playing a difficult piece, I’ll stop, have myself a cuppa tea or go for a jog and later on start all over again. There is really nothing you can’t achieve with a fresh, clear mind.

Autumn
Autumn has made its early debut here although at times masquerading as late summer and as busy as I was (I’ve been asking myself with what lately?), I’m unprepared. My summer ballerinas still laid around and jackets for colder and wetter days are still unpacked. Enough said, my body is still in the mood for summer but mother nature has decided otherwise. While grocery shopping a couple of days ago, I noticed that there are Christmas cookies and gingerbread for sale already. Rows and rows of ‘em. Life is already fast-forwarded to Christmas mood in autumn. Unbelievable.

On relationship
Work has been taking precedence over private matters lately. Juggling needs and wants requires finesse. I’ve been receiving lotsa wedding invitations from friends near and far, attending parties with young parents and their little toddlers crawling around being cute. Seeing and experiencing these joyous occasions are just a tangible proof that people still have faith in marriage. On the other hand, it is extremely disheartening to see couples going separate ways after a couple of decades of marriage, when kids have grown up and marriage vows forgotten. It makes me wonder what was the point of tying the knot in the first place and save yourself from all the heartache later on when things are probably bound to go astray?

There are times when I’m required to gently touch on the keys to be playing piano, although I’m already playing the piano. Whereas there are times I should exert more force on the keys in order to play forte. Now I understand why piano is also known as pianoforte. Playing a piece of music ain’t exactly a piece of cake I tell ya. No wonder it’s rude to give staccato replies as I know it’s not easy playing staccato on the piano. The language of music is sort of like a window to the soul. There are endless musical definitions that can be used to describe the interpretation of musical pieces which more often than not baffle the clueless me. There are pieces where you should be playing espressivo (with expression) or there are times you are required to play cantabile (with a singing stlye). Until now, I still fail to grasp the idea of how to play a music piece with a singing style on the piano? Enlightenment me please.

Not before I’ve had my first piano lesson did I know that Italian is the language of music.

I was lucky enough to be invited to a private classical music recital given by my piano teacher accompanied by a Russian violinist recently. It was actually my first time attending such a recital and I’d say it was quite an eye-opening experience for me as I’ve always thought that classical music and me exist in two different universe. I was absolutely entranced by the duo performing the night’s programme which was made up of arrangements from Beethoven, Tartini, Debussy and Tchaikovsky. The rendition of violin and piano was brilliantly done with great emotion and expression. I found myself at a loss of words in comparing modern age music with classical music. It was like comparing a bottle of beer with a bottle of old age whiskey.

The violinist was composed and self-assured as she guided the audience through the tumultuous piece from Tartini, Devil’s Trill Sonata, which is highly regarded as technically demanding for violin. While the pianist (my piano teacher) played the piano with such virtuosity that was awe-inspiring and bedazzling at the same time.

As I saw the pianist’s fingers glided gracefully with measured speed and ease across the piano keys, I couldn’t help but wonder, how long will I need to learn in order to be just half as good as him.

It’s been half a year since I first took up my piano lessons and the winter semester has coming to an end. I’m even amazed at myself for sticking to the piano practice rather diligently, converting skeptics into believers along the way that it is better late than never.

In retrospect, I’ve come to understand why I’ve developed such an aversion to the piano while I was young. I was bored to death as I had to practice those tuneless pieces over and over again, y’know, as a form of finger exercise.

However, learning to play the piano as an adult now, with more discipline to boot as repetition is important, just as Pi put it in the book ‘Life of Pi’, I can say it’s a totally different experience. I learn to appreciate the music more. It was absolutely enjoyable, recognizing that song coming out of the keys is The Groovy Kind Of Love or I would nod with girlish exuberance when the piano teacher demonstrated the Scarborough Fair, asking me whether I remember that tune. Who doesn’t?

That is what I love about playing the piano. It is the music that comes out of it that serves as a balm to the soul.

When it comes to learning to play the piano, it all comes down to, practice, practice and MORE PRACTICE. As a (late) beginner, with my rusty fingers to boot, I never knew it can be quite confusing at first to remember all the keys and I’m still struggling to memorize some notes.

But I’m having lotsa fun with my new found past time . The feeling is wonderful. Instead of watching longingly all this while at people playing classics like Pachelbel’s Canon (my absolute favorite!), wistfully wishing that I can play that piece myself too, it’s like a dream comes true. Although I’m starting with the easy version for now.

I’ve been practicing the beginner version of Scott Joplin’s The Entertainer lately, with diligence . I just love its rhythm, the tune and the playfulness of it, the song is simply awesome.

I’ve noticed one thing however that I have problems falling asleep when I practiced too long at night or shortly before bedtime. I wonder whether practicing piano can hyper activate the brain, eh?

One thing for sure, my fingers have never felt like they’ve been torn apart and s.. t.. r.. e…. t…. c…….h… e… d like this before.

Psst…I’ll tell you a secret. I just had my ‘first’ piano lesson today.

I arrived 10mins early at the piano school and had to wait outside the room for my turn because the piano teacher told me he has another student before my allocated hour. I was already deeply aware of the complex composition surging from behind the closed door.

W-o-w..the piece sounded very much like those being played in concerts by professional pianists. It continued without a break for the whole of ten minutes while I was waiting outside.

I was wondering to myself how long do I have to learn and practice to be able to play ‘close’ like the student and suddenly the door was opened and the piano teacher came out and greeted me with a warm handshake. Then I realized that it was he who was playing the whole time.

He seems nice and friendly and I fervently hope so because the last thing I need is discouragement from my own piano teacher. It’s nice learning everything all over again and I was like being transported back in time, yet everything now is seen through the mind of an eager student.

I had the pleasure to visit the nearby music school last weekend. I didn’t know that a music school exists at all near this small town where I’m staying! Talking about ignorance.

I had this strange feeling tugging at my subconsciousness when I heard the sound of a piano from slanted windows as I stepped into the old but well-kept two-storey building which formerly served as the local town-hall. I kept waiting for the old, familiar feeling to creep in anytime. But there was no fear, no apprehension, no anxiety.

The music school was having a music-carousel-day where visitors were allowed to experiment and play with all the music instruments available. I had a fun time, wandering from room to room marveling at the different music instruments and enjoying myself watching those small children playing zither with their tiny little fingers!

I had a chance to chat with the school’s coordinator and one of the piano teacher. I was told that they offered piano for rent for a small fee for those who isn’t sure about buying them at first. Isn’t it great!

Now that I’ve registered and school’s starting in October, I can’t wait. It feels nice being a student again .

Once upon a time, there was this little girl, whose life was made miserable by a ‘giant elephant’. By ‘giant elephant’ she meant the piano. You see, she absolutely loathed the piano and she could find no words that was blasphemous enough because she was too young to know any of those, that she just named the piano the ‘giant elephant’.
She was forced at a young age to attend piano lessons because almost every friends in her class seemed to be attending one. It was almost like an unspoken rule at that time for parents to send their children to piano lessons at an early age. So she thought she was one of those ‘unlucky’ children.

She couldn’t feel the thrill and the beauty of the music drifting from the piano. She just wished she was wearing an ear plug to keep the sound off. She stared dully at those notes while moving her finger lifelessly across the keys. Every so often her teacher would criticize the way her hands dragged across the piano keys as if the weight of her hands was too much to bear.

She hated those songs that she was forced to play. It didn’t help much when she was forced to play the same song over and over again because the movement of her hands wasn’t timed perfect enough. Such stupid rules. She was sent to the piano school a few days a week for practice because she didn’t have a piano at home.

So one day she gathered enough courage to tell her mother the truth about how much she hated her piano lessons. She wanted to quit. To her surprise, her mother didn’t put up much complaints and she was allowed to have her way. She was so happy that she couldn’t wipe away that smug smile on her face for the rest of the week because she finally got rid of the ‘giant elephant’ from her life just a few days shy of her first piano exam.
